Syria has signed a strategic partnership with CMA CGM Air Cargo aimed at modernising its air freight sector and expanding the country’s role in regional and international logistics.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony at the People’s Palace in Damascus, held under the patronage of Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The event also saw the signing of two additional agreements and memoranda of understanding covering the civil aviation and air transport sector.
Under the agreement, the Syrian Aviation Holding Company will work with CMA CGM Air Cargo to strengthen the country’s air cargo capabilities through fleet development, operational support and the transfer of technical expertise.
The partnership was signed by Syrian Aviation Holding Company Chief Executive Captain Anwar Akkad and CMA CGM Group Chairman and Chief Executive Rodolphe Saadé.
The collaboration is intended to expand Syria’s cargo aircraft fleet, improve logistics services and introduce operational practices aligned with international aviation standards.
It also aims to increase air freight capacity while supporting the launch of new cargo routes and destinations.
Officials said the agreement is designed to strengthen Syria’s integration into global supply chains by improving the movement of imports and exports and enhancing international trade links.
The long-term objective is to position the country as a regional hub for air cargo and freight services.
Captain Akkad described the partnership as a significant step in rebuilding Syria’s air cargo industry, saying it would help create a more efficient and competitive air transport system capable of meeting growing regional and international demand.
The agreement forms part of wider efforts to develop Syria’s civil aviation sector and attract international partnerships as the country seeks to modernise its aviation infrastructure and expand connectivity.
