Air Canada has announced that it has secured the IATA CEIV Lithium Batteries certification for its Air Canada Cargo division, marking a significant step in strengthening its specialised cargo capabilities and reinforcing its commitment to safety, compliance and operational excellence.
The certification confirms the airline’s adherence to globally recognised standards for the safe handling, storage and transportation of lithium battery shipments. This segment continues to see strong growth across the global air cargo market, driven by increasing demand from industries such as consumer electronics, medical technology, electric vehicles and energy storage.
Janet Wallace, Managing Director, Cargo Operations and Transformation at Air Canada, described the achievement as a key milestone for the carrier. She noted that the certification highlights the strength of the airline’s people, processes and operational discipline, while also providing customers with greater confidence in the safe and compliant handling of complex, highly regulated shipments.
As part of the certification process, Air Canada conducted a comprehensive review of its cargo operating procedures and underwent an independent IATA audit. This included an in-depth assessment of its documented processes, operational activities and an on-site evaluation of its Montréal (YUL) cargo facility.
In addition, key personnel, including Dangerous Goods specialists and members of the Cargo Operations and Transformation Management team, completed specialised IATA lithium battery training to ensure full compliance with certification requirements.
With this achievement, Air Canada further strengthens its position in the specialised cargo sector, particularly in the safe transport of lithium batteries, which remain a critical and fast-growing component of global supply chains.
