Swissport International Reaches Pharma Milestone at EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg
Swissport has reached a major operational milestone at EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg, handling 1,000 temperature-controlled containers (RKN-equivalent units) through its cool+connect facility.
The achievement highlights strong growth in pharmaceutical cargo volumes and reinforces Basel’s position as a key European gateway for life sciences logistics.
Rapid Growth Since cool+connect Launch
Since launching the cool+connect infrastructure in February 2025, Swissport has processed more than 1,000 temperature-controlled units at the Basel hub.
Monthly volumes have now increased to 200–250 RKN-equivalent units, reflecting sustained demand for reliable, airport-based cold chain solutions.
The growth positions Swissport at the centre of pharmaceutical supply chains linking Europe with key global markets, particularly across Asia.
Optimised Cold Chain Handling
Swissport’s cool+connect facility is designed to enhance the handling of temperature-sensitive shipments, particularly within the +2 to +8°C range.
By consolidating shipments directly at the airport for loading into active cool containers, the system:
- Eliminates off-airport trucking loops
- Reduces handling times by approximately 70%
- Lowers CO₂ emissions
- Maintains full cold chain integrity
The facility is supported by integrated digital monitoring systems, ensuring real-time visibility and control throughout the handling process.
Basel Strengthens Role as Pharma Hub
The milestone underlines Basel’s growing importance as a European life sciences export hub and Swissport’s expanding role in temperature-controlled logistics.
The company currently operates a global network of 24 certified pharma centres and 65 pharma-capable warehouses, supporting pharmaceutical supply chains worldwide.
Responding to Rising Pharma Demand
Andreas Behnke, Regional Head of Cargo for Switzerland, Italy and France at Swissport, said the milestone reflects structural growth in temperature-controlled cargo.
He noted increasing demand from pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare logistics providers for airport-based solutions that reduce complexity and transit times.
Further Enhancing Cold Chain Resilience
Building on the success of cool+connect, Swissport is also introducing newly tested thermal covers for transport dollies at Cargo Basel.
These reusable covers are designed to maintain stable temperatures for up to three hours during airside transport, even in extreme weather conditions, further strengthening cold chain resilience.
Supporting Next-Generation Pharma Logistics
With continued investment in infrastructure, digital monitoring and handling innovation, Swissport is positioning itself to meet the evolving requirements of global pharmaceutical supply chains, where speed, reliability and temperature control are critical.
