The 2025 Brazilian fresh ginger season has officially concluded with record-breaking shipments arriving at major U.S. gateways via American Airlines Cargo. Over 900 tonnes of premium-grade ginger were successfully transported from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to Miami and Los Angeles, reinforcing Brazil’s status as a global leader in ginger cultivation.
This year’s harvest, praised for its exceptional quality, comes from some of Brazil’s most experienced and environmentally conscious producers. These farms are leading the way in sustainable agriculture, implementing practices such as reduced pesticide use and improved soil management — aligning with growing consumer demand for traceability and eco-friendly sourcing.
Lorena Sandoval, of American Airlines Cargo, stated:
“We are seeing the growing importance of Brazilian ginger, which is a high-quality product with larger, cleaner roots that meet export standards with minimal processing. We are proud to play a key role in bringing this exceptional crop to international markets.”
The ginger, packed in standard cartons on skids and requiring no refrigeration, is efficiently handled and shipped aboard American’s B787-8 and B777-200ER aircraft. Upon arrival, Miami and Los Angeles serve as strategic distribution hubs, with seamless access to inland markets via ground transportation networks.
Brazilian ginger — particularly from the mountainous Espirito Santo region and areas surrounding São Paulo — is recognized for its robust aroma, spicy flavor, and a distinctive blue-grey hue. Often referred to as “Blue Ginger,” this variety is rich in gingerol, the active compound known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive health properties.
Unlike other global varieties, Brazilian ginger is more fibrous and nutrient-dense, making it especially appealing to health-conscious consumers and culinary professionals. Most shipments arrive unprocessed, preserving the root’s full natural potency and freshness.
The majority of Brazilian ginger in the U.S. is sold fresh in supermarkets, with a portion supplied to restaurants and foodservice providers.
This year’s successful harvest and distribution highlight both the growing global demand for premium fresh ginger and the vital logistics role played by American Airlines Cargo in supporting international perishable trade.
