Kenya Airways and Air Tanzania have signed a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation in cargo operations and expanding connectivity across East and Southern Africa.

The agreement, formalised in Dar es Salaam, represents a concerted effort by both flag carriers to enhance cargo and logistics capabilities, focusing on collaboration over competition to promote sustainable regional growth.

Key elements of the MoU include joint development in air freight operations, maintenance and repair (MRO) services, engineering, and technical support.

The carriers also plan to share best practices in safety, innovation, and training to build long-term efficiency and resilience within their logistics networks.

Cargo is a major focus of the partnership, with both airlines set to align resources to provide faster, more flexible freight services between regional and international markets.

The move is expected to improve trade flows, reduce transit times, and offer greater route options for cargo clients across East Africa.

Allan Kilavuka, group managing director and CEO of Kenya Airways said: “This partnership underscores our commitment to building regional capacity to support economic growth, trade, and tourism.

“By collaborating closely with Air Tanzania, we can jointly offer cargo customers a more integrated and reliable network.”

Peter Ulanga, Air Tanzania CEO added: “Together with Kenya Airways, we are creating a stronger, more connected aviation landscape.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our mission to expand regional freight services and better serve the growing demand for air cargo in Africa.”

The MoU also paves the way for cooperation in areas such as human resource development, aircraft maintenance, and shared cargo infrastructure, with both airlines committed to leveraging their internal capabilities to reduce costs and improve service quality.

The agreement was signed at the Johari Rotana Hotel in Dar es Salaam and reflects a broader ambition to position East Africa as a competitive logistics hub on the continent.
