Amazon is restructuring its middle-mile logistics operation by bringing its air cargo business together with its ground transportation and sort centre teams under a single leadership structure.
Raoul Sreenivasan, head of Amazon Air, will expand his responsibilities to oversee the wider Middle Mile organisation within Amazon Transportation Services.
The change is designed to improve coordination across the company’s transportation network, which moves packages between fulfilment centres and delivery stations.
Amazon’s middle-mile operation relies on a combination of dedicated cargo aircraft, trucks and sorting facilities. By bringing these functions together, the company aims to create a more integrated network and streamline operational planning and decision-making.
Sreenivasan said the new structure would enable a more connected approach to moving packages across Amazon’s logistics network, with closer coordination between air and ground transportation.
Amazon Air integrated into wider logistics network
The restructuring places Amazon Air more directly within the broader transportation organisation responsible for the movement of goods before they enter the final-mile delivery network.
The integration could allow Amazon to better coordinate aircraft capacity, trucking requirements, sort centre operations and fulfilment volumes, potentially improving network efficiency and responsiveness.
Sreenivasan also recognised Joanne Rzeppa for establishing the foundations of the organisation and praised her leadership and operational performance.
The move comes as Amazon continues to expand and develop its in-house logistics infrastructure to support its growing e-commerce operation.
Amazon Air operates a dedicated freighter fleet alongside a network of air hubs and gateways, forming an increasingly important part of the company’s middle-mile transportation system.
By combining its air and ground operations, Amazon is seeking to create a more seamless flow of parcels across its network while strengthening coordination between different modes of transport.
