WFS Expands E-commerce and Freight Forwarder Handling Operations at Frankfurt Airport

Share

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a SATS company, has announced a major expansion of its E-commerce & Freight Forwarder Handling (EFFH) services at Frankfurt Airport, Europe’s largest air cargo hub, following the signing of a long-term lease on two new warehouse facilities set to commence operations in January 2026.

This strategic investment strengthens WFS’s footprint in one of the world’s most important logistics gateways and positions the company to capture new growth opportunities from freight forwarders, trucking operators, and e-commerce shippers driving demand across the German and European markets.

Expanding Capacity to Meet Rising Demand

The two facilities, located on a 24,000 m² site within Frankfurt Airport’s Cargo City South, include two warehouses and two office buildings that will be fully equipped with ULD handling systems, volume and dimension scanners, and other advanced cargo technologies.

Once fully operational, the new complex will enable WFS to handle up to 100,000 tonnes of import and export freight annually for E-commerce and Freight Forwarder Handling clients.

The expansion comes as Frankfurt Airport’s cargo volumes continue to climb — rising 6.2% year-on-year in 2024 to 2.1 million tonnes, with throughput up an additional 1% in the first half of 2025. Much of this growth is being driven by surging cross-border e-commerce activity and the increasing integration of air and ground logistics services.

Strengthening WFS’s Longstanding Commitment to Frankfurt

WFS already maintains a strong presence at Frankfurt Airport through its airline handling subsidiary Frankfurt Cargo Services (FCS), operated in partnership with Fraport. The addition of EFFH facilities further demonstrates WFS’s commitment to supporting the airport’s long-term development and evolving logistics landscape.

Marc Claesen, Senior Vice President Northern Europe & Africa at WFS, said:

“As a premier air cargo gateway, Frankfurt is a focal point for global freight forwarders as well as for large e-commerce shippers serving the German and European markets.
As a frontrunner in developing new services to meet the growing complexity of the air cargo value chain, WFS/SATS welcomes this opportunity to introduce our full EFFH capabilities to customers in Frankfurt.
Forwarders and e-commerce shippers value the efficiency, reduced touchpoints, and faster throughput our solutions deliver — and we see strong growth potential here.”

A Strategic Step in WFS’s European Growth Plan

The Frankfurt expansion forms part of WFS/SATS’s broader strategy to enhance e-commerce and forwarding logistics capabilities across key European hubs, providing customers with end-to-end visibility, speed, and service reliability through digitalization and process innovation.

By combining advanced technology with decades of operational expertise, WFS continues to deliver next-generation handling solutions that meet the evolving needs of the global air cargo industry.
