Teesside International Airport in the UK’s northeast has inaugurated its first FedEx flight following a five-year agreement for an airfreight handling facility at the airport. The partnership’s maiden flight, a Boeing 737-400 (OE-IAE), arrived from Edinburgh Airport on Monday evening.

Alun Cornish, managing director of ramp and gateways operations for Northern Europe at FedEx, expressed excitement about the new collaboration. “It’s always a joy to see the first plane come in to land at a new site. Teesside International Airport was chosen because it provides excellent access to Yorkshire and the Northeast, and we’re seeing increased import and export demand from customers in this region as businesses in this area continue to grow in number and strength,” he said. He also highlighted the efficiency of their road operation based out of Hangar 1 at the airport, ensuring quicker package transfers from flights to the road network.

Phil Forster, managing director of Teesside International Airport, emphasized the significance of this development. “This is a significant step into the cargo market and we look forward to growing our operations further in the future thanks to the investments taking place across the airport estate,” Forster noted.

FedEx has shifted its eight inbound and outbound flights to Teesside from Newcastle Airport. This new cargo operation will handle nearly 90 tonnes of cargo weekly through the airport. Additionally, FedEx has renewed its commitment to its road operation by signing a separate five-year lease.

Teesside International Airport has been enhancing its cargo infrastructure in recent years. In January, it was approved as a Border Control Point (BCP), enabling it to handle perishable goods like flowers, fruit, and vegetables. Last year, the airport opened a £2.5 million freight facility, featuring a 21,000 sq ft hangar equipped with security screening technology, handling, freight forwarding, customs clearance, and storage capabilities.
