Swissport has announced the appointment of Torsten Wefers as the new Head of Cargo Commercial for Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India (CEMEAI). This marks a significant step in the company’s strategy to strengthen its cargo operations in key global markets.

Strengthening Regional Strategy and Growth

Based in Cologne, Wefers will be responsible for shaping Swissport’s cargo commercial strategy across the CEMEAI region, focusing on partnerships, network expansion, and driving growth. His appointment comes at a time when demand for air cargo services is evolving, and Swissport is keen to reinforce its presence in the region.

Return to the Air Freight Sector

Wefers brings extensive experience to the role, having returned to the air freight sector after a successful tenure at Liège Airport. There, he served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for four years, playing a pivotal role in the airport’s commercial and strategic development.

Under his leadership, Liège Airport increased its annual cargo volume from around one million tonnes in 2023 to approximately 1.32 million tonnes in 2025. Additionally, Wefers led the expansion of the airport’s cargo network and contributed to the long-term Masterplan 2040, aimed at modernising the airport’s infrastructure.

Previous Experience and Industry Expertise

Before his role at Liège Airport, Wefers held various positions in air cargo and logistics, focusing on commercial strategy, airline relations, and cargo operations. His background includes working with global logistics companies, as well as leading projects in network planning, business development, and stakeholder management.

Swissport’s Strategic Focus

The appointment reflects Swissport’s commitment to reinforcing its commercial capabilities across the CEMEAI region, particularly as air cargo demand continues to grow and evolve. The company aims to leverage Wefers’ extensive experience in cargo growth and infrastructure development to position itself as a leader in air cargo services.

Wefers’ leadership is expected to play a crucial role in driving Swissport’s cargo strategy, building on the company’s existing infrastructure and partnerships to meet the evolving demands of global logistics.
