Maastricht Aachen Airport (MST) has teamed up with FlowerWatch, a specialist in floral supply chain monitoring, to enhance the quality and longevity of sensitive cargo—particularly fresh flowers—moving through the Dutch logistics hub.
The partnership targets a major pain point in perishable logistics: temperature fluctuations. According to MST, inconsistencies in temperature during transit can lead to up to 20% waste in flower shipments.
“We know that temperature inconsistencies can drive up to 20% waste in flower freight,” said Dean Boljuncic, head of commercial development at Maastricht Aachen Airport. “By making these fluctuations transparent and actionable, we can drastically reduce losses, increase profitability for our customers, and ensure flowers arrive fresher and last longer for the end consumer.”
Using FlowerWatch’s real-time monitoring tools and data loggers, the airport will gain precise insight into temperature conditions throughout the cargo journey. These insights will allow handlers to make immediate adjustments and optimise processes to preserve product integrity—from farm pick-up in Africa to final delivery in Europe.
“This partnership with FlowerWatch is a game-changer for our perishable cargo operations,” Boljuncic added. “Optimising handling processes is central to our strategy, and this innovative step reinforces our competitive edge, ensuring MST remains the preferred gateway for high-value, sensitive cargo.”
MST’s location already supports fast-tracked logistics, offering direct motorway access and short ground times that allow perishables like fruits, vegetables, and flowers to exit the airport within two hours of landing. The addition of FlowerWatch’s tech is expected to enhance this operational efficiency further.
This latest partnership follows MST’s recent agreement with ECS Livestock to position the airport as the Netherlands’ “preferred airport for horse transport.”
