Lufthansa Cargo Enhances Temperature-Sensitive Freight Services with Four Key Innovations

Share

Lufthansa Cargo has unveiled a series of innovations aimed at reinforcing its leadership in the transport of temperature-sensitive goods, such as vaccines, biotech materials, and high-tech components. With a global network of over 350 stations, the carrier builds on its two core offerings:

  • Active Temp Control: Powered container technology for consistent temperature regulation
  • Passive Temp Support: Utilizes thermal covers, temperature-controlled storage, and protective handling without powered units

These services are supported by:

  • 120+ Active Temp Control stations
  • 230+ Passive Temp Support stations
  • Frankfurt’s CEIV-certified Pharma Hub, the largest in Europe

New Innovations to Elevate Cold Chain Performance

  1. Pharma Control Tower
A 24/7 service launched in April 2025 offering real-time monitoring, proactive intervention, and centralized customer support across 30 CEIV-certified stations.

  2. Thermo Cover
Advanced thermal covers now enhance Passive Temp Support shipments during ramp handling, initially deployed on summer routes from Frankfurt to destinations like Chicago, Cairo, and Toronto.

  3. smartULD
A digital container tracking system offering real-time temperature profiles for Active Temp Control shipments—accessible through Lufthansa’s online portal.

  4. td.Zoom for Passive Shipments
High-priority service td.Zoom is now available for Passive Temp Support cargo, enabling faster handling and greater capacity access for time-critical goods.

Lufthansa Cargo spokesperson:
“Our aim is to continuously improve transport quality and process stability. These innovations reflect our focus on customer proximity, operational reliability, and the safe movement of sensitive cargo worldwide.”
