Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has confirmed the successful recovery of key components of the cargo aircraft that crashed into the sea near Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on 20 October, following an extensive multi-day salvage operation supported by the Guangzhou Salvage Bureau.
The complex operation involved professional divers, engineers, and heavy-lift specialists working around the clock to recover major sections of the aircraft, which came to rest in waters off HKIA’s North Runway.
Major Structural Recoveries Completed
At 22:41 local time on 24 October, salvage crews successfully lifted the aircraft’s tail section from the water and placed it on a barge for inspection by the Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA). The aircraft’s flight recorder, commonly referred to as the black box, was retrieved shortly thereafter for analysis.
Earlier the same day, one of the aircraft’s engines and its landing gear assembly were raised from the seabed.
By 19:37 on 26 October, crews had also successfully lifted the main fuselage, securing it on a barge for transfer to a designated storage site, where it will undergo detailed examination by AAIA investigators.
Authorities confirmed that the remaining wreckage is expected to be fully recovered and secured by 27 October, marking the completion of the primary salvage phase.
Flight Operations Remain Stable
AAHK noted that, despite the complexity of the operation, flight operations at Hong Kong International Airport have continued as normal since recovery work began on 24 October.
The coordinated efforts of the AAHK, AAIA, and the Guangzhou Salvage Bureau have ensured the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible handling of the recovery process.
Ongoing Investigation
The AAIA continues to lead the investigation into the 20 October cargo aircraft accident, in which two airport security staff tragically lost their lives when the aircraft veered off the runway and entered the sea.
Authorities have expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed their commitment to determining the cause of the accident through a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
