FedEx Opens Advanced Logistics Hub Near Manchester Airport to Strengthen UK Cargo Network

FedEx has inaugurated a new 38,000 sq ft logistics facility near Manchester Airport, expanding its air cargo operations in the North West of England as part of a broader strategic network enhancement.

The newly opened site, situated just half a mile from the airport, is part of FedEx’s plan to improve freight capabilities in response to growing demand from e-commerce and international trade. The region surrounding Manchester accounts for 22.5% of the UK’s total freight GDP, making it a critical logistics hub for national and international operations.

The facility is equipped with advanced automated sorting technology and x-ray screening systems, designed to improve parcel handling and accelerate freight processing. FedEx said the site mirrors the technology at its Stansted Airport hub, which has already yielded measurable benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Steve Johnson, managing director of UK air operations at FedEx, called the opening a key milestone in the company’s UK strategy. “With the rising demand for cargo aviation and the rapid growth of e-commerce, we recognise the need to reconfigure our network to prioritise both speed and efficiency,” he said.

He added that the investment reinforces FedEx’s long-term commitment to UK businesses. “We are committed to setting our customers up for success in what continues to be a dynamic period for trade and logistics. Our goal is to ensure businesses in the North West experience the same benefits we’ve already delivered at Stansted.”

The Manchester hub represents FedEx’s continued investment in modernising its infrastructure to support the evolving needs of the freight and logistics sector across the UK.
