DSV launches new airfreight charter linking US and China amid rising trade tensions

Global logistics provider DSV has announced the launch of a new transpacific airfreight charter service connecting Chicago and Shanghai, despite escalating trade tensions and newly imposed tariffs between the United States and China.

The new service, branded “Shanghai Star,” will commence operations on 13 May, offering multiple round-trip flights each week. DSV says the route will streamline cross-border shipping, providing a reliable, time-sensitive link between two of the world’s most critical economic hubs.

Though the company has kept detailed operational specifics under wraps, DSV confirmed that the service will offer guaranteed capacity and specialised equipment capable of handling oversized, hazardous, and temperature-sensitive cargo, as well as out-of-gauge freight.

Stefan Krikken, DSV’s global vice president for airfreight said: “Shanghai Star reinforces the strength of our airfreight charter network, exemplifying our commitment to reliable and efficient cargo transport — ensuring timely deliveries and supporting global logistics with unwavering dedication.”

The launch comes at a precarious time for US-China trade, as new tariffs and the recent rollback of the de minimis exemption on e-commerce shipments into the US have added uncertainty to transpacific logistics. Analysts had expected these developments to dampen demand and ease pressure on capacity.

However, some carriers may reallocate aircraft to other markets, potentially destabilising supply chains and creating renewed demand for dependable charter options.

With its expanded charter offering, DSV appears to be positioning itself as a solution provider in an increasingly volatile trade environment, offering shippers direct access to capacity and greater control over delivery timelines.
