DHL Express has inaugurated a new international hub at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, following a €80m investment aimed at meeting rising demand in global express transport.
Completed in under two years, the facility is designed to handle long-term growth in international shipments, particularly driven by e-commerce.
It will serve as a key gateway for both import and export operations, reinforcing Barcelona’s role in DHL’s global network.
DHL Express has operated its own aircraft at Barcelona since 1995, supporting local exporters and building sustained growth in the region.
Activity at the airport rose by 30% in the five years leading up to the pandemic, fuelled largely by the boom in online shopping, before levelling off in line with a global slowdown in trade.
The company said the new hub was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing it to adapt to evolving shipment flows and projected demand over the next 20 years without disrupting operations.
