Billund Airport and HT Transport have announced a joint DKK 80 million investment in a new air cargo and logistics terminal, reinforcing Billund’s position as one of Northern Europe’s key air freight hubs. The new facility is scheduled to enter service in spring 2026.
The development comes as air cargo volumes at Billund Airport continue to grow, with annual freight throughput approaching 90,000 tonnes for the second consecutive year. The expansion aims to ensure the airport can accommodate rising demand while maintaining high standards of operational efficiency, security, and cargo handling quality.
The new cargo terminal will significantly expand Billund Airport’s existing freight infrastructure and improve the interface between road transport and aircraft operations, enabling faster and more resilient cargo flows.
New Cargo Facility Specifications
The project includes the construction of:
A 9,800 m² cross-docking terminal and long-haul cargo hall, featuring secured storage areas An 800 m² multi-storey administration building 54 truck loading ramps with direct and efficient access to airside cargo operations
According to Ronny Lilienvald, Development Director at Billund Airport, the investment reflects the airport’s responsibility to scale infrastructure in line with demand.
“When we break records in air freight, a responsibility follows. We must be able to manage growth without compromising on operations, safety, or quality,” Lilienvald said.
Long-Term Partnership with HT Transport
HT Transport, which has operated in Billund since 1973, views the new terminal as a natural step in strengthening the airport’s cargo ecosystem.
Chairman of the Board Jørgen Poulsen said the facility will improve cargo flow and reduce handling times across the value chain.
“The new building will create a more efficient flow, shorter processing times, and a more robust operation, benefiting customers, partners, and the wider logistics network,” Poulsen said.
Improved Traffic Flow and Reduced Urban Impact
As part of the cargo area expansion, Hedevej has been rerouted and upgraded, providing trucks with more direct access to the cargo terminal. This infrastructure improvement is expected to reduce heavy vehicle traffic through Billund city, including areas around Legoland and Lalandia, easing congestion and improving safety.
Part of Billund Airport’s Airport City Strategy
The new cargo terminal forms a key component of Billund Airport’s Airport City development strategy, which aims to attract logistics and aviation-related businesses, stimulate regional investment, and create new employment opportunities around the airport.
With construction underway, Billund Airport and HT Transport say the project will help ensure the airport remains a critical gateway for air cargo in Northern Europe, capable of supporting future growth in global supply chains.
