YunExpress Expands UK Presence at East Midlands Airport

YunExpress has received approval to begin operations at its newly developed cargo handling facility at East Midlands Airport, marking a significant expansion of its UK and European logistics network.

The move strengthens the airport’s position as the UK’s leading express air freight hub while supporting the rapid growth of cross-border e-commerce.

First Chinese Cargo Handler Based at a UK Airport

The launch marks a milestone for YunExpress as the first Chinese cargo handling company to establish operations at a UK airport, enabling full plane-to-door logistics capability within the country.

The company has secured key regulatory approvals, including:

  • Regulated Agent status from the UK Civil Aviation Authority
  • ITSF approval from Border Force

Operations are set to begin with the first handled flight on 30 April.

Supporting Growing E-Commerce Demand

YunExpress began operating its own Boeing 777F freighter flights into East Midlands Airport in partnership with Central Airlines in May last year.

Initially, the new facility will handle cargo for:

  • Four weekly flights
  • Each carrying approximately 100 tonnes of goods

The company plans to expand its services to additional airlines as capacity grows.

New 7,000 sqm Facility and Local Investment

The new 7,000 sqm cargo facility, developed within an existing airport warehouse, will employ around 40 staff and is designed to support scalable operations.

The investment enhances YunExpress’s ability to manage high-volume e-commerce shipments while improving efficiency and service levels.

Strengthening East Midlands’ Cargo Hub Status

Adam Andrews, Commercial Director at East Midlands Airport, said the investment highlights the airport’s strategic importance as a cargo hub, with 24/7 operations and access to 80% of the UK population within four hours.

He added that the airport expects continued growth, with plans to develop additional cargo facilities on-site.

Long-Term Growth Strategy in Europe

Orson Wang, General Manager of YunExpress UK, described the launch as a key milestone in the company’s European expansion.

He noted that East Midlands Airport was selected for its central location, strong infrastructure and efficient market access, adding that YunExpress aims to develop a fully integrated, end-to-end logistics operation in the UK.

The company is also exploring opportunities to support additional airlines, particularly Chinese operators, as it continues to scale its presence in the region.

Driving the Future of Cross-Border Logistics

With growing demand for fast, reliable e-commerce logistics, YunExpress’s investment positions it to play a central role in connecting global markets and supporting international trade flows through the UK.
