KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has placed the first order for a new range of air cargo pallets developed by Dutch manufacturer VRR, marking a new chapter in a partnership that spans more than 50 years.
The order covers VRR’s recently launched We Keep It Simple pallet range, which was introduced at the end of last year. The pallets are designed to be robust, compliant with industry standards and suited to everyday cargo operations, without unnecessary technical complexity.
Long-standing partnership
For VRR, the first order is seen as more than a commercial milestone. The company’s relationship with KLM dates back to the late 1960s, when VRR was still producing aluminium containers.
At that time, changes to air cargo regulations pushed VRR to explore opportunities in unit load devices (ULDs). With support from KLM, the company worked towards meeting certification requirements, eventually transitioning into ULD manufacturing. By the 1980s, VRR had become an established supplier to the airline.
Over the years, the partnership has included the development of a wide range of cargo equipment, from standard ULDs to specialist products such as horse stalls.
Focus on practical design
VRR says the new pallet range reflects the same practical approach that has shaped its work with KLM for decades.
Managing director Geert van Riemsdijk said the first order was particularly significant given the history between the two companies. He said KLM had supported VRR’s development from its earliest steps into ULD manufacturing and had continued to trust the company to deliver reliable solutions.
Confidence from the airline
From KLM’s side, the airline said its long relationship with VRR had been built on consistency and a strong understanding of operational needs.
Erick Reinders, senior buyer at KLM, said the airline had seen VRR’s products evolve alongside its own cargo operations. He added that the company’s clear and pragmatic design approach made it a trusted partner, including for new pallet solutions.
The order marks the first commercial deployment of VRR’s We Keep It Simple pallet range and signals KLM’s confidence in the latest addition to the manufacturer’s cargo equipment portfolio.
