Gary/Chicago International Airport (GCIA) has announced significant progress in its ongoing “Phase 1” cargo services expansion, supported by a $9.82m state grant.
The funding, previously allocated by the State of Indiana, will allow the airport to complete all eight planned widebody aircraft parking stands at once.
The positions, set across 25 acres of concrete ramp, are scheduled to be ready by the end of 2025. Completing the work simultaneously is expected to save the airport around $8.5m in overall costs.
In a parallel move, GCIA has awarded a $15m contract to Superior Construction Co. to build a new cargo and general aviation ramp.
Covering 8.5 acres of concrete on a 50-acre site, the project is expected to take about five months to finish.
The upgrades form part of the airport’s wider strategy to grow its logistics and aviation infrastructure, positioning GCIA as a key regional hub for cargo operations.
