New Cargo Terminal at Katowice Airport Enters Design Phase

As part of the signed agreement, KWADRAT will prepare a project concept, and construction works project for the new cargo building. It will be located in the south-eastern part of Katowice Airport, between the existing cargo terminal (put into service in May 2016) and the new airport maintenance services base. The new cargo terminal will be a storage facility with an office/social base; it will cover approx. 10,000 sq. m. After putting the terminal into use, the total surface of infrastructure used to handle cargo in Pyrzowice will increase to approx. 22,000 sq. m. Conclusion of works related to designing the building is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Cargo traffic is one of the pillars of operations at Katowice Airport, which is the largest regional airport in Poland in the commercial cargo traffic segment. A dedicated cargo area is in the south-eastern part of the airport; it comprises a cargo terminal with an area of approximately 12,000 sq. m and an apron for freighters. In 2024, Katowice Airport handled 37.1 thousand tonnes of cargo, which was the second-best result in the airport’s history. A record-breaking result was noted in 2022, when the cargo terminal handled over 40.6 thousand tonnes of freight.

“We have had a record-breaking first half of 2025, during which we handled almost 22,000 tonnes of goods. We will conclude 2025 by handling, for the second time in our history, over 40 thousand tonnes of cargo. In the long term, we are aiming for around 100,000 tons of freight, mainly due to growing shipments for the e-commerce industry. The expansion of cargo infrastructure is essential, hence our decision to begin designing and then constructing a second cargo terminal,” said Artur Tomasik, President of the Board of GTL S.A., the company managing Katowice Airport.

Among others, the following companies have established branches in Pyrzowice: DHL Express, UPS and FedEx. Since October 2024, all-cargo flights are realized to Katowice Airport from Ürümqi (China); in April 2025, Lufthansa Cargo commenced scheduled all-cargo flights on the Frankfurt – Katowice – Frankfurt route. Katowice Airport is the first airport in Poland from which the carrier handles regular cargo flights. Additionally, Lufthansa Cargo operates a road feeder service (RFS) freight consolidation facility in the airport’s cargo terminal; it is based on transport of goods between airports via trucks. Each RFS operation is treated like a flight; every truck is assigned a flight number.

The second cargo terminal at Katowice Airport is one of the projects included in a comprehensive investment program for 2024-2032, which is the largest expansion of Katowice Airport in its history. In addition to the new freight facility in Pyrzowice, the following will also be built: a new central passenger terminal with a road system, a fourth aircraft maintenance hangar, a new base for the Airport Rescue and Firefighting unit, a new airport maintenance base, and a multimodal goods and fuel delivery hub with railway siding connection (the project is co-funded by the European Union as part of Connecting Europe Facility – Military Mobility 2021-2027). There are also plans to expand outdoor car parks, build a multi-story car park, and create a transportation hub integrating bus, rail, and air transport. The estimated value of the investment program for 2024-2032 is PLN 1.8 billion.
