WFS Begins HVO Biofuel Trial for Airside Transport Fleet at Heathrow Airport

Share

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) is launching a three-month trial of HVO biofuel in its airside transport fleet at London’s Heathrow Airport, aligning with SATS’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities and Heathrow’s aim for all airport vehicles to be zero-emission or biofuel-powered by 2030.

Starting on July 1, 2024, the trial will initially involve two of WFS’s airside transport vehicles. If successful, WFS plans to expand biofuel use across its fleet of 77 airside vehicles, which support 10 airline customers and conduct around 130,000 truck movements annually at Heathrow.

The biofuel for the trial is supplied by Airport Energy, a part of WP Group. This initiative builds on WFS’s existing sustainability efforts, which include transitioning its airside vans from diesel to fully electric and ensuring the rest of its fleet meets the Euro 6 environmental standard, reducing harmful emissions and improving local air quality.

Paul Carmody, WFS’ Managing Director UK Cargo, commented, “This trial will help us determine if biofuel is suitable for our operation. If successful, we will transition more vehicles to HVO (hydrotreated or hydrogenated vegetable oil) over the next 12 months. We are committed to supporting Heathrow’s sustainability goals through cleaner biofuels.”

James Golding, Head of Cargo at Heathrow Airport, added, “Heathrow is dedicated to decarbonisation. Biofuels are crucial to our Heathrow 2.0 sustainability strategy and cargo strategy, aiming for all airside vehicles to be zero emissions. We support WFS’ biofuel trials, which will help reduce lifecycle carbon emissions at Heathrow, benefiting both people and the planet.”
