London Luton Airport Launches New Consolidation Centre

London Luton Airport (LLA) has unveiled a new consolidation centre as part of a wider £11.5 million refurbishment programme aimed at modernising airport infrastructure and supporting local employment.

The facility is expected to create up to 30 new jobs for people in the local community.

Transforming Former Monarch Airlines Hangars

The consolidation centre is located in one of three former Monarch Airlines hangars acquired by the airport in February 2024.

The wider redevelopment programme will see the remaining hangars repurposed into:

  • An easyJet apprenticeship training campus for future engineers
  • Aircraft engineering and maintenance facilities

Once completed, the overall programme is expected to generate up to 150 new jobs.

Improving Airport Logistics and Efficiency

The new facility will streamline the handling of hundreds of thousands of retail goods delivered to the airport each year.

It will consolidate deliveries from multiple suppliers serving more than 50 shops and restaurants across the terminal, improving operational efficiency and resilience.

The airport said the system will provide a more scalable logistics platform to support future passenger growth.

Reducing Vehicle Movements and Emissions

Consolidated deliveries will be carried out using lower-carbon HVO-powered vehicles, helping reduce traffic movements and emissions across the airport campus.

The initiative forms part of the airport’s broader sustainability efforts to improve operational efficiency while lowering environmental impact.

Supporting Local Communities and Businesses

Alberto Martin, Chief Executive Officer of London Luton Airport, said the investment demonstrates the airport’s commitment to supporting the local economy and creating employment opportunities.

He added that the project reflects strong collaboration with airport owner Luton Rising and will benefit both local businesses and the airport’s expanding supply chain network.

Long-Term Investment in Airport Infrastructure

The consolidation centre represents another step in London Luton Airport’s ongoing infrastructure development strategy, combining logistics improvements, sustainability initiatives and workforce development to support future growth.
