LODD Autonomous and Astral Aviation have announced a strategic partnership to expand drone-based cargo transportation across Africa, marking a major step forward in improving last-mile delivery capabilities in some of the continent’s most remote and underserved regions.
Under the collaboration, the Hili — the UAE’s first hybrid heavy cargo Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft — will be deployed within African logistics networks. The aircraft is designed to operate in challenging terrain, offering faster, more flexible, and more cost-effective cargo transport for communities where traditional air or road infrastructure is limited.
Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous, said:
“This partnership represents a significant milestone in accelerating drone-based cargo operations across Africa. Together with Astral Aviation, we aim to introduce a scalable, efficient solution that strengthens logistics connectivity and addresses last-mile delivery challenges on the continent.”
Sanjeev Gadhia, Founder and CEO of Astral Aviation, added:
“I am happy with this partnership, which allows us to advance our collaboration with Hili and bring this technology to Africa. We’re proud because this is a solution designed specifically for the continent.”
The introduction of heavy-lift hybrid VTOL technology is expected to support sectors including healthcare, e-commerce, mining, humanitarian logistics, and essential supply chain operations.
