Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) has partnered with HKT to establish the city’s first 5G private network-powered air cargo terminal, marking a significant milestone in digital transformation for the region’s logistics sector.

The collaboration aims to elevate Hactl’s automation capabilities, enhance global logistics efficiency, and further solidify Hong Kong’s position as a world-class aviation and logistics hub. In 2024, Hactl handled over 40% of the 4.9 million tonnes of cargo processed at Hong Kong International Airport, the world’s busiest international cargo airport.

The new high-speed, ultra-low latency, and secure 5G private network will transform Hactl’s SuperTerminal 1 into a smart, interconnected cargo ecosystem, setting the stage for future technologies that boost productivity and efficiency.

Key enhancements enabled by the 5G network include:

  • Seamless Autonomous Electric Tractor (AET) Operations: Real-time coordination and adaptive navigation of AETs will streamline cargo transport with minimal human intervention.
  • Enhanced Security with AI-Powered Patrol Robots: Equipped with real-time video analytics and live streaming to Hactl’s Security Control Centre, the robots will ensure continuous, proactive surveillance and immediate threat response.
  • Smart Warehouse Automation: A 5G-connected Smart Cargo Locating system and intelligent forklifts will enable automated cargo tracking, real-time positioning, and communication with central systems, improving accuracy and operational flow.

Steve Ng, Managing Director of Commercial Group at HKT, said: “Connectivity is of paramount importance for digital transformation in the air cargo industry. Our partnership with Hactl marks a significant move toward next-generation, AI-driven logistics and real-time automation.”

Wilson Kwong, Chief Executive of Hactl, added: “This 5G installation is a key step in our commitment to innovation. It lays the groundwork for future use of robotics, autonomous vehicles, and digitalised processes across our SuperTerminal 1 facility.”

The initiative not only enhances current operations but also positions Hactl at the forefront of smart logistics, setting a new standard for air cargo terminal management globally.
