The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, based on the Isle of Wight, is thrilled to announce a landmark partnership with Cargolux, Europe’s leading all-cargo airline, to transport two rescued European Brown Bears, Benji and Balu, from Azerbaijan to the UK.
In what is believed to be the first mission of its kind from Azerbaijan, Cargolux has agreed to fully sponsor the flight for the bears, removing one of the most significant logistical and financial barriers to their rescue. The airline will also fly in custom-built transport crates, manufactured in Europe, ahead of the relocation — a crucial step, as no such equipment exists within Azerbaijan.
A 3,000-Mile Journey Toward Freedom
The journey from Azerbaijan to the UK spans nearly 3,000 miles and will take just five to six hours by air — a massive improvement over the alternative: a multi-day, arduous trip by road, rail, or sea. The emphasis throughout planning has been on minimising stress and maximising animal welfare.
“There is no doubt that without Cargolux, this project may never have come to fruition,” said Lawrence Bates, CEO of the Wildheart Sanctuary.
“Cargolux are world-renowned for their expertise in transporting live animals, notably their historic mission to relocate two beluga whales to Iceland. Their generosity, professionalism, and shared values in animal welfare have helped us overcome the final hurdle.”
A New Chapter for Benji and Balu
Benji and Balu, brothers held in dire conditions for years as a form of entertainment at a restaurant in Azerbaijan, will soon have a completely new life. Deprived of natural habitat, they lived on concrete floors with no access to water, hibernation, or proper nutrition.
Upon arrival in the UK, the bears will move to a specially designed 3,500sqm enclosure at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, complete with trees, grass, ponds, and natural hibernation areas. The sanctuary’s expert animal care team will lead their rehabilitation and reintegration.
The final stages of the mission are now underway. A team of veterinary specialists will accompany the bears during transit to ensure safety and wellbeing. Upon arrival, ground handlers and animal care staff will oversee the seamless transfer across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, where their new home awaits — pending completion of all required regulatory paperwork. Their arrival is expected in June 2025.
Richard Forson, President and CEO of Cargolux, commented:
“At Cargolux, we are committed to animal welfare and environmental responsibility. This partnership aligns with our values and demonstrates how air cargo can play a meaningful role in global conservation efforts. We look forward to seeing Benji and Balu thrive in their new home.”
A Community-Driven Mission
The entire operation has been underpinned by a remarkable fundraising campaign, with overwhelming support from the local Isle of Wight community and beyond. The rescue mission is not just a triumph for two bears — it’s a symbol of what’s possible through international cooperation, community compassion, and corporate commitment to sustainability and ethical action.
For Benji and Balu, a new life of dignity and care is just a flight away.
