Brussels Airport, United Airlines, and VEDP Sign MoU for Dedicated Pharmaceutical Corridor

Brussels Airport has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with United Airlines and the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP) to establish a dedicated pharmaceutical air cargo corridor between Brussels Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport.

This strategic partnership is designed to create a standardized and optimized flow of pharmaceutical and life science products, reinforcing Brussels Airport’s position as Europe’s preferred pharma hub.

Strengthening Transatlantic Pharma Supply Chains

The collaboration aims to streamline processes between Brussels and Washington Dulles, enhancing the movement of vital pharma shipments across the Atlantic.

Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport, emphasized that strong partnerships and well-aligned communities are key to the airport’s success in pharma logistics. He stated:

“This collaboration recognises Brussels Airport’s expertise in pharma logistics and the strength of our ecosystem. By sharing best practices and exchanging knowledge, we can work more efficiently and continue to strengthen transatlantic pharma supply chains.”

Brussels Airport: A Leader in Pharma Logistics

Brussels Airport has long been a leader in pharmaceutical logistics. In 2014, it became the first airport globally where the entire cargo community achieved CEIV Pharma certification. Today, it boasts Europe’s largest temperature-controlled storage capacity, supporting the seamless transport of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products.

The airport’s location in Belgium, the world’s fourth-largest exporter of pharmaceutical products, places it at the heart of a dense network of life sciences companies, cementing its role as a critical gateway for pharma and healthcare logistics.

Virginia’s Growing Pharmaceutical Sector

The MoU also recognizes the growing importance of Virginia’s pharmaceutical sector, which is seeing significant investment from leading biopharmaceutical companies. These developments underscore the state’s role as a key hub for advanced manufacturing and a strategic gateway for US pharmaceutical exports.

Jason El Koubi, President and CEO of VEDP, highlighted the importance of international connectivity in supporting Virginia’s growing pharmaceutical industry:

“This partnership underscores the value of long-term collaboration in building resilient supply chains and expanding Virginia’s reach across Europe and beyond.”

United Airlines: The Primary Carrier for Pharma Shipments

As part of the agreement, United Airlines will serve as the primary carrier on this dedicated route, currently operating a daily flight between Brussels and Washington Dulles. The airline will focus on transporting pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of these critical goods.

A Long-Term Strategic Partnership

This collaboration builds on Brussels Airport’s expertise and the growing pharmaceutical sector in Virginia, aiming to optimize air cargo operations for pharma and life science products. The partnership will enhance the transatlantic pharma supply chain, improving the speed and reliability of shipments between Europe and the United States.

By leveraging best practices, advanced infrastructure, and reliable air cargo services, the MoU marks a milestone in the future of pharma logistics across the Atlantic.
