Amazon Air has begun operating dedicated cargo flights to the Dominican Republic, marking a significant boost to the country’s logistics and trade sector.
The inaugural service, a Boeing 767 freighter, landed at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo on Tuesday. Operated in partnership with ALK Global Logistics and airport operator AERODOM, the new route links Miami and Santo Domingo with seven weekly flights, adding around 770 metric tonnes of weekly capacity.
The service will run independently of Amazon’s own e-commerce operations, offering scheduled and reliable third-party cargo solutions for freight forwarders and logistics firms.
Alfonso Alemán, chief executive of ALK Global Logistics, described the launch as a “milestone” for the company. “This new route positions us at the forefront of logistics in the region, allowing exporters and importers to benefit from faster and more reliable solutions,” he said.
Mónika Infante Henríquez, AERODOM chief executive added: “Welcoming Amazon Air Cargo reinforces Santo Domingo’s role as the Dominican Republic’s primary cargo gateway. Together with ALK and Amazon, we are driving competitiveness, efficiency and growth in international trade.”
The service will be handled on the ground by Caribe Cargo.
Growing regional hub
Las Américas International Airport (SDQ) already handles more than 15 million pounds of imports and exports each month and has positioned itself as a leading cargo hub in the Caribbean. Customs clearance at the airport can take less than three hours, enabling global delivery within 24 hours.
To support rising demand, particularly from e-commerce, AERODOM has invested US$6m in a new express cargo terminal, increasing storage and handling capacity by 186% and allowing for an extra 4 million packages per year.
The facility is equipped with advanced X-ray inspection systems designed to speed up processing and enhance security.
Backed by VINCI Airports, AERODOM says its investment strategy is also focused on modernising infrastructure and accelerating environmental initiatives, including more efficient energy and water use.
Industry observers say Amazon Air’s arrival cements Santo Domingo’s status as a strategic logistics hub for the wider Caribbean, strengthening regional supply chains and boosting opportunities for exporters.
