Finnair sees higher cargo growth despite Middle East route suspension

Finnish flag carrier Finnair reported strong growth across its passenger and cargo operations in May, driven by rising demand on European and Asian routes despite ongoing geopolitical challenges affecting parts of its network.

The airline’s cargo business also continued to expand, with total freight volumes increasing by 4.3% year-on-year. Growth was primarily supported by stronger demand in both European and Asian markets.

Revenue cargo tonne kilometres (RCTKs), a key industry measure of air cargo traffic, rose by 4.8%, underlining the resilience of Finnair’s freight operations.

Cargo remains a strategically important part of Finnair’s business model, particularly on long-haul routes connecting Europe and Asia, where the airline has traditionally maintained a strong market position.

Operational performance also improved during the month. Finnair reported that 82.8% of its flights arrived on schedule, up from 80.6% in May 2025.

The improvement in punctuality comes as airlines across Europe focus on maintaining reliable operations ahead of the peak summer travel season, when passenger demand is expected to reach some of its highest levels of the year.
