WestJet Cargo to Discontinue Freighter Operations and EVP Kirsten de Bruijn to Depart

WestJet Cargo has announced plans to discontinue its freighter operations, aligning with the airline’s broader strategy shift. The Canadian airline confirmed that its dedicated freighter services, including the two Boeing 737-800 converted freighters currently in operation, will no longer be part of the company’s core focus. Additionally, another two freighters are currently in storage. The airline is exploring various opportunities for these aircraft but will shift its attention to optimizing the belly capacity of its passenger fleet for global airfreight.

Since taking delivery of its first freighter in April 2022, WestJet Cargo faced challenges in deploying it, including delays in obtaining approval for the aircraft’s conversion. The carrier put two of its four freighters into storage last year due to tough market conditions.

WestJet is not alone in scaling back its freighter operations. In 2023, Air Canada canceled an order for two new Boeing 777 freighters and reduced its 767 freighter fleet plans. Cargojet also decided against adding 777 freighters to its fleet.

In a related development, WestJet Cargo also confirmed that Kirsten de Bruijn, Executive Vice President of Cargo, will leave the company in June 2025. De Bruijn played a key role in the growth of WestJet Cargo, helping build a high-performing organization capable of adapting to a rapidly evolving market.

WestJet Cargo CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech praised de Bruijn’s leadership in a LinkedIn post, noting her instrumental role in shaping the cargo business. De Bruijn expressed pride in her team’s accomplishments, stating that with the freighters transitioning out of WestJet’s operations, now felt like the right time for her to pursue new challenges.
