Tim Strauss Named CEO of 21 Air to Lead Strategic Expansion in Cargo Operations

Share

Tim Strauss, former CEO of Amerijet International and Vice President of Cargo at Air Canada, has been appointed CEO of 21 Air, a Miami-based cargo airline. Strauss assumes leadership during a critical growth phase for the airline, which recently began operating flights for Amazon alongside providing capacity for DHL Express.

Although 21 Air has not yet issued an official announcement, multiple industry sources confirm that Strauss took over as CEO in April 2024. The airline’s website continues to list Michael Mendez, the former CEO, as its Chief Operating Officer.

Based at Miami International Airport, 21 Air operates a fleet of eight Boeing 767 freighters. The airline is owned by Avia Investments LLC, a joint venture with backing from Jim Crane, owner of the Houston Astros and a leader in the logistics industry. Canadian cargo airline Cargojet holds a 25% stake in the company.

Strategic Leadership and Industry Expertise

Tim Strauss brings a wealth of experience to 21 Air, with a career defined by notable achievements in the cargo aviation industry. During his time at Amerijet International, he spearheaded a fleet expansion that nearly tripled the airline’s capacity. However, his tenure also included challenges, such as operational issues with leased Boeing 757 freighters that led to financial difficulties.

After a brief hiatus, noted on his LinkedIn profile as “Retirement,” Strauss returns to the aviation sector with a clear mandate to enhance 21 Air’s competitiveness in the growing cargo market.

Expanding Footprint in E-Commerce and Logistics

21 Air has significantly bolstered its presence in the logistics sector, with Amazon now joining its client base—a key milestone in its expansion strategy. The airline continues to provide critical air cargo capacity for DHL Express, further strengthening its position in the e-commerce and express logistics markets.

Under Strauss’ leadership, 21 Air aims to leverage its solid operational foundation to explore new partnerships and expand its services, positioning the airline for sustained growth in the competitive cargo aviation landscape.
