Swissport has announced a strategic partnership with Aurrigo International to trial next-generation autonomous ground handling technologies at Zurich Airport, marking a key milestone in its innovation roadmap.
The collaboration will see the deployment of Aurrigo’s Auto-Sim digital platform alongside a live trial of the company’s autonomous Auto-DollyTug vehicle. The initiative is designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability across ground operations and further position Swissport as a pioneer in aviation automation.
“By integrating autonomous technologies into our operations, we are taking a next step in redefining ground handling – improving safety, boosting efficiency and supporting the sustainability ambitions of our airline and airport partners across our global network,” said Warwick Brady, President and CEO of Swissport.
The pilot project begins with the integration of Auto-Sim, a simulation platform that models ground operations in a virtual environment. This tool will help Swissport identify automation opportunities and support data-driven planning for future infrastructure and operations.
The second phase of the project will introduce the Auto-DollyTug, an autonomous electric vehicle capable of automated loading and unloading of ULDs, equipped with 360° obstacle detection and advanced situational awareness. The solution is engineered to optimize ramp operations and integrate with existing fleet coordination systems.
As part of the agreement, Swissport has secured exclusive operational rights to deploy Aurrigo’s autonomous solutions at its co-operated locations worldwide. This includes early access to Aurrigo’s remote control and command platform, enabling scalable deployment of autonomous technologies across Swissport’s global footprint.
“This partnership with Swissport is a pivotal step in scaling autonomous innovation across global aviation,” said David Keene, CEO of Aurrigo. “It underscores our shared commitment to long-term collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence in aviation automation.”
The initiative comes amid strong growth for Aurrigo’s autonomous division, with Keene noting that 2024 marked another year of significant progress for the company.
The partnership also lays the foundation for evaluating other airport locations where Aurrigo’s autonomous solutions could be implemented, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to shaping the future of ground handling.
