SmartLynx Airlines to exit A321 freighter operations

Share

SmartLynx Airlines has announced plans to phase out its Airbus A321 freighter (A321F) operations by mid-2025 as part of a broader fleet restructuring strategy aimed at focusing solely on passenger services.

The ACMI, cargo, and charter operator, part of Avia Solutions Group, said the decision aligns with shifting market demands, citing a significant rise in passenger traffic in 2024.

According to the airline, passenger numbers exceeded 10 million last year, with over 68,000 flights operated, a notable milestone that has influenced its strategic direction.

While SmartLynx did not disclose specific reasons behind the exit from freighter operations, it emphasized a renewed focus on sustainable growth through its Airbus A320 and A321 passenger fleet.

Currently, the airline’s fleet includes 10 A321-200Fs, though it has not confirmed how many are active.

The move marks a significant shift from earlier expansion plans — just two years ago, SmartLynx had six A321Fs and had aimed to increase that number to 17 by the end of 2024.

The broader market for air cargo remained robust last year, with global airfreight demand surpassing 2021’s record volumes by 0.5%, fueled by e-commerce growth and ocean freight disruptions.

Nonetheless, geopolitical tensions, including the war in Ukraine and Middle East conflicts, posed operational challenges, such as restricted airspace and rising fuel costs.

This is not the first cargo exit for Avia Solutions Group — Bluebird Nordic, another group subsidiary, ceased all operations in May 2023, despite having fleet expansion plans the previous year.
