At COP29, Silk Way Group unveiled plans for a groundbreaking infrastructure project: a new cargo airport in the Alat Free Economic Zone, aimed at strengthening the group’s logistics capabilities and fostering growth in the strategically located region.
The new airport will be developed under Silk Way Alat Free Economic Zone Company, a subsidiary created to advance the group’s infrastructure initiatives. The project includes forwarder warehouses, advanced perishables handling facilities, and modern office buildings. It aims to position the Alat Free Economic Zone as a major logistics hub by integrating this new airport with Baku International Sea Trade Port and the region’s rail and road networks.
Sander Doves, Director of TKH Airport Solutions, a technology partner for the project, highlighted the deployment of CEDD AGL, TKH’s innovative airfield lighting system designed for sustainability and energy efficiency. This technology will play a crucial role in making the airport’s operations environmentally friendly.
The new airport will feature 18 aircraft stands, a 4,000-meter runway, a control tower, and full-service amenities such as fuel and fire services. Once completed in 2026, the airport and the Alat Free Economic Zone will become key logistics hubs in Azerbaijan and the Middle Corridor, with enhanced transportation and distribution networks for international trade.
Silk Way Group President, Zaur Akhundov, emphasized the project’s role in addressing growing freight transport needs. He stated, “This new cargo airport in the Alat Free Economic Zone is a transformative milestone for the region, aligning with Silk Way’s growth strategy and creating promising new avenues for business and international partnerships.”
Jawad Dbila, CEO of Silk Way Alat Free Economic Zone Company, echoed this sentiment, saying the airport will solidify Azerbaijan’s role as a logistics hub, driving connectivity, sustainable practices, and economic development.
TKH Airport Solutions CEO, Erik Velderman, added, “We are honored to provide Silk Way with CEDD AGL technology for this CAT III Cargo Airport, supporting sustainability and significant energy savings. We look forward to minimizing environmental impacts in air cargo operations.”
With construction in progress, the Alat Free Economic Zone is set to strengthen Azerbaijan’s standing as a crucial link in the global logistics and transport landscape, generating economic growth and broadening connectivity across the region.
