Menzies Aviation Expands Presence at Auckland Airport

Menzies Aviation has strengthened its cargo operations in New Zealand with the opening of Auckland Airport’s first dedicated airside cargo terminal, marking a major milestone in the country’s logistics infrastructure.

The new facility, located within the airport’s Cargo Precinct, significantly expands Menzies’ footprint and enhances its operational capabilities at New Zealand’s primary international freight gateway.

Doubling Capacity at New Zealand’s Key Cargo Hub

Handling up to 89% of New Zealand’s international air freight, Auckland Airport processes more than 168,000 tonnes annually.

The newly opened 32,000 sqm terminal doubles Menzies’ operational footprint and provides direct airside access, enabling faster and more efficient cargo movement.

Developed in partnership with Auckland Airport, the site is secured under a 15-year agreement and will serve as Menzies’ primary cargo gateway in the country.

Advanced Infrastructure and Digital Integration

The facility features:

  • Modern material handling equipment
  • Optimised operational layout
  • Integration with Menzies’ MACH cargo management system
  • Implementation of Nallian’s Truck Visit Management (TVM) solution

These enhancements are designed to improve efficiency, streamline workflows and support data-driven decision-making across cargo operations.

Focus on Pharma, E-Commerce and Perishables

The terminal will specialise in handling time- and temperature-sensitive shipments, including pharmaceuticals and e-commerce cargo, alongside general freight and freighter services.

By the end of the year, the site is expected to achieve IATA CEIV Pharma certification, reinforcing its capability to handle high-value and sensitive cargo.

Supporting Strong Export Growth

The expansion comes amid rising export demand, particularly in perishables.

Recent figures show:

  • 34% year-on-year growth in fresh produce air freight
  • 175% increase in avocado shipments
  • 2,888 tonnes of cherries exported, up 53% year-on-year

The new facility is positioned to support this continued growth and evolving cargo mix.

Enhancing Efficiency Through Centralisation

Mark Thomson, Chief Commercial Officer at Auckland Airport, said the relocation to the Cargo Precinct will deliver significant operational efficiencies, including faster and more secure cargo transfers via a dedicated airside road.

The move forms part of the airport’s long-term strategy to centralise cargo operations away from passenger areas.

Strengthening Menzies’ Regional Growth

Beau Paine, Executive Vice President Cargo at Menzies Aviation, described the expansion as critical to the company’s continued growth in Oceania.

He highlighted the collaboration behind the project and said the new facility will elevate service standards for airline partners and freight forwarders.

A Milestone for Auckland Airport

The opening coincides with Auckland Airport’s 60th anniversary, underscoring its continued investment in future-ready cargo infrastructure.

With enhanced capacity, advanced technology and a focus on specialised cargo, the new terminal positions both Menzies Aviation and Auckland Airport to meet growing demand and support global trade flows.
