Liege Airport Achieves Record-Breaking Cargo Growth

Share

Liege Airport set new benchmarks last month with an impressive 2,586 cargo aircraft movements. This figure represents a 12.6% year-on-year increase compared to 2,297 movements recorded in November 2023.

Cargo tonnage also surged, reaching 112,106 tonnes in November 2024, a 16% rise from the 96,497 tonnes handled in the same period last year.

Torsten Wefers, vice president of sales and marketing at Liege Airport, highlighted the significance of these milestones, stating: “These are the highest levels reached in 2024. Liege Airport’s cargo community has demonstrated exceptional performance throughout the year, supporting the unique growth path of LGG. The outlook for 2025 is very encouraging.”

Liege’s cargo airline portfolio has expanded significantly in 2024, with a 20% increase bringing the total to 49 freighter carriers operating regularly via the airport. Additionally, nearly 60 logistics companies now operate around the airport, benefiting from Liege’s “unique cargo-only approach.”

European Cargo Leader

In October 2024, Liege Airport ranked second among European airports for cargo tonnage growth, trailing only Madrid Airport. The airport’s strong performance reflects a surge in demand from Asia, with imports playing a more prominent role than exports—a trend tied to ongoing economic challenges in Europe.

Global Air Freight Trends

Liege’s achievements align with broader industry trends. According to Xeneta’s latest market analysis: “Global demand for air freight showed no signs of slowing in November, with volumes recording a thirteenth consecutive month of double-digit growth and load factors reaching their highest level since April 2022.” Demand grew by 10% year-on-year in November, driven by the ongoing boom in e-commerce.

Liege Airport’s record-breaking performance underscores its pivotal role in global logistics and positions it as a leader in the cargo aviation sector.
