Hong Kong International Airport Retains Position as the World’s Busiest Cargo Airport in 2025
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has topped the global cargo rankings for the 15th time since 2010, achieving a remarkable cargo throughput of 5.07 million tonnes in 2025. This achievement reinforces HKIA’s position as the world’s leading cargo airport.
Strong Performance Amidst Challenges
Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), expressed pride in retaining the title of the busiest cargo airport:
“We are greatly honoured to retain our position as the world’s busiest cargo airport. Thanks to the collective efforts of the air cargo community and strong support from various government departments, we continue to expand our capacity and enhance capability in handling high-value cargoes, e-commerce fulfilment, and cross-boundary transhipment, all being strategic and high-growth segments.”
Despite intense regional competition and global economic uncertainties, HKIA remains focused on improving competitiveness and tapping into high-growth sectors to secure its cargo leadership.
Key Initiatives Enhancing HKIA’s Cargo Capabilities
HKIA has introduced several initiatives in 2025 to solidify its position as a premier air cargo hub:
- New UPS Hub Construction: In March 2026, UPS began constructing a new cargo hub at HKIA, slated to handle nearly one million tonnes annually upon completion in 2028.
- Air-Land Fresh Lane: A joint initiative between AAHK and the Hong Kong and Guangdong authorities, the Air-Land Fresh Lane optimizes cross-boundary perishables transhipment, improving efficiency and allowing goods to reach major Greater Bay Area cities within hours.
- HKIA Dongguan Logistics Park: The Dongguan Logistics Park has already handled cargo valued at over RMB57 billion. With the first phase of permanent facilities under construction, the park is expected to handle over one million tonnes of cargo annually upon full operation.
