Glasgow Prestwick Airport welcomes first e-commerce flight

Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK), in collaboration with Royal Mail, welcomed its first dedicated e-commerce cargo flight after a year of expanding its e-commerce operations.

The flight, chartered by Zhonger Express and Jumen Logistics, was operated by Silk Way West Airlines Cargo and carried 90 tonnes of cargo for Royal Mail’s final mile deliveries. The shipment included products from major e-commerce platforms Temu and TikTok, with their representatives present to observe handling at PIK.

This milestone follows PIK’s designation as Royal Mail’s international e-commerce hub for the UK and its recent expansion efforts in Asia, including appointing a sales representative in China.

Nico Le Roux, Business Development Director at PIK, said: “This flight demonstrated PIK’s efficient and reliable solution for e-commerce imports to the UK. Our expert teams swiftly offloaded, sorted, and dispatched the cargo for onward delivery.”

Earlier this year, PIK invested over £2 million in new cargo equipment, including two high loaders and 12 dollies, to support faster turnaround times.

Edwin Ning of Zhonger Express and Jumen Logistics commented: “Partnering with Prestwick and Royal Mail exceeded expectations and delivered a market-leading solution for e-commerce shippers. We plan to return regularly in the New Year.”

PIK’s partnership with Royal Mail was announced at the air cargo China exhibition in Shanghai.

Vivian Davies, Director of Global Imports at Royal Mail, added: “Our collaboration with PIK during peak times ensured smooth handling and faster final mile delivery. We look forward to developing more innovative solutions together.”

PIK’s Business Development team is working on scheduling regular e-commerce flights in the New Year and plans to export Scottish whisky and salmon to the Far East on return flights.
