Emirates SkyCargo Expands Fleet with Additional 747 Freighters Amid Growing Demand

Share

Emirates SkyCargo has enhanced its operations by adding two more Boeing 747 freighters, anticipating continued growth in the air cargo market throughout the year.

The airline revealed that the addition of these wet-leased aircraft has increased its freighter capacity by 15% compared to the same period last year.

Badr Abbas, divisional senior vice president at Emirates SkyCargo, explained the rationale behind this strategic move:
“Throughout 2024, we made substantial investments in both new and leased freighter aircraft to address evolving global supply chain and air cargo demands. These efforts ensure we maintain a steady capacity to serve our worldwide customers effectively. This remains a top priority as we prepare for our next phase of growth.”

Abbas also highlighted the broader implications of the expansion:
“We foresee continued strong demand, reflecting Dubai’s status as a global logistics hub. Strengthening our cargo capabilities aligns with Dubai’s Economic Agenda, enabling us to reach new destinations, enhance existing operations, and expand our specialized product offerings.”

The multi-year lease agreement for the Boeing 747 freighters was signed with the Compass Group. Emirates and Compass have also expressed intentions to explore further collaboration opportunities.

With the inclusion of the two new freighters, Emirates SkyCargo’s fleet now consists of 10 Boeing 777Fs and six Boeing 747Fs. Additionally, the airline has placed orders for 13 more 777Fs, slated for delivery over the next two years. Emirates is also considering next-generation freighter models, including the Boeing 777-8F and Airbus A350-1000F, to further enhance its fleet.

In a separate development, Emirates has partnered with IAI for the conversion of 10 passenger aircraft into freighters. However, these 777 conversion programs have faced delays due to approval processes and were not included in the latest updates.

Last year, Emirates received two new 777Fs, which were promptly deployed on high-demand routes from Asia to support the booming e-commerce sector.

The decision to expand its freighter fleet aligns with industry forecasts, which anticipate another year of robust air cargo market growth. According to IATA, air cargo demand is expected to rise by 5.8% this year, while Xeneta projects growth rates between 4-6%.
