Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its existing CCTV infrastructure, significantly enhancing safety and security monitoring across its facilities.
By partnering with Intenseye, a specialist in AI-powered workplace safety solutions, Cathay Cargo Terminal now utilizes advanced computer vision and AI algorithms to detect and mitigate safety and security hazards in real time. This cutting-edge technology optimizes workplace safety, helping to reduce risks and improve operational efficiency.
The AI system, integrated into the terminal’s existing CCTV network, monitors a variety of safety and security concerns, including:
Detecting when safety equipment is not worn.
Identifying vehicles or equipment moving dangerously close to workers or other machinery.
Ensuring adherence to pedestrian walkways and work-at-height protocols.
Detecting intrusions and other terminal-specific scenarios.
A unique addition to the system is the capability to issue real-time alerts for unattended shipments at truck docks, a feature co-developed by Cathay Cargo Terminal and Intenseye to address specific cargo terminal needs.
The Intenseye platform operates on Ethical UI principles, ensuring built-in privacy protections while focusing solely on identifying potential hazards.
Mark Watts, Chief Operating Officer of Cathay Cargo Terminal, emphasized the importance of safety in operations:
“We take safety and security extremely seriously. AI is a powerful tool to enhance our safety management system, helping us ‘see the unseen’ and strengthening hazard reporting as we strive for a zero-harm workplace.”
Sercan Esen, CEO of Intenseye, highlighted the groundbreaking nature of the partnership:
“Cathay Cargo Terminal is leading the way as the first to adopt our technology, customized to their environment. It’s rewarding to see the tangible impact of these solutions on safety and operational efficiency.”
Beyond workplace safety, Cathay Cargo Terminal is leveraging AI to improve cargo screening processes. AI is being deployed across all X-ray machines as part of its Enhanced Lithium Screening program, and the company plans to introduce AI into its Thermal Imaging program by 2025.
Tom Owen, Director of Cathay Cargo and Chair of Cathay Cargo Terminal, noted the broader implications of these advancements:
“With this new AI technology, we are setting new standards in both safety and digital excellence for cargo terminal operations.”
Cathay Cargo Terminal has also demonstrated its commitment to digital innovation with the introduction of a business-to-business (B2B) ePayment solution earlier this year, further solidifying its position as a leader in the industry.
