Share

With global air freight handling 5 billion tons of goods annually, valued at approximately €340 billion, Germany remains a key hub for international trade and logistics. To enhance efficiency and innovation in the sector, the Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG) has reinforced its Air Cargo Committee with new leadership.

New Leadership for Strategic Growth

BARIG has appointed two experienced air cargo leaders as co-chairmen:

  • Jorge Carretero, Sales Director Central Europe at LATAM Cargo
  • Thilo Schäfer, Director Cargo at Condor

Both bring extensive expertise in logistics, automation, and digitalization, which are shaping the future of air freight.

Michael Hoppe, BARIG chairman and executive director, highlighted the industry’s growth potential:
“Although air freight volumes in Germany are nearing 2019 levels, there is still significant room for expansion, particularly for economic benefits.”

Strengthening Germany’s Role in Global Freight

BARIG’s Air Cargo Committee includes over 30 cargo-focused airlines and around 100 passenger airlines that also transport freight.

Thilo Schäfer emphasized the importance of maintaining Germany’s position as a major EU freight hub:
“Germany remains a central hub for global air freight, but competition is intensifying. Strengthening our market position is critical for long-term success.”

Jorge Carretero stressed the need for innovation and adaptability:
“The logistics and air freight industry in Germany faces numerous challenges. By leveraging our international expertise, we aim to develop innovative and practical solutions for a more efficient and competitive air cargo infrastructure.”

The committee will focus on automation, streamlined logistics, and strategic policies to enhance Germany’s competitiveness in the European air freight market.
