The Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG) has strengthened its cargo committee by appointing a second chairman, aiming to enhance its focus on the freight sector.

Jorge Carretero, Sales Director Central Europe at LATAM Cargo, and Thilo Schäfer, Director Cargo at Condor, will jointly lead the committee as co-chairmen.

“Although airfreight volumes in Germany are nearing pre-pandemic levels, there remains significant growth potential, particularly for economic benefit,” said Michael Hoppe, BARIG Chairman and Executive Director. “I am pleased to have two seasoned airline and logistics professionals, Jorge Carretero and Thilo Schäfer, at the helm of our Air Cargo Committee.”

The Air Cargo Committee includes cargo managers from BARIG’s member airlines, representing over 30 dedicated freight carriers as well as around 100 passenger airlines that also transport airfreight in the lower deck.

Schäfer noted, “Germany remains a vital hub for global airfreight within the European Union. However, this leadership position is under growing competitive pressure. It’s crucial to enhance the framework conditions in Germany to sustainably bolster its competitiveness in the European market. I look forward to driving forward future-oriented initiatives such as automation, digitalisation, and process optimisation with the BARIG Air Cargo Committee.”

Carretero added, “The logistics and airfreight sectors in Germany are currently facing numerous challenges that will shape future developments. To establish the best possible processes and framework conditions, we collaborate within the committee to develop innovative and practical solutions, leveraging the expertise of our international community.”
