Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), a member of the SATS Group, has strengthened its partnership with American Airlines in Europe by securing a new cargo handling contract in Copenhagen. This agreement supports the launch of American Airlines’ daily Boeing 787 flights between Denmark and its transatlantic hub in Philadelphia.

WFS is already managing American Airlines’ increasing cargo volumes in several European countries, including France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The new contract in Denmark will benefit from WFS’ ongoing investments in its cargo and premium product handling infrastructure at Copenhagen Airport.

At the end of 2022, WFS expanded its operations at the airport by opening its third new cargo terminal, adding an additional 3,700 square meters of capacity. Copenhagen is one of more than 25 global airports in WFS’ network featuring a dedicated GDP-certified pharmaceutical handling facility, supporting customers in the Medicon Valley life science business community in Greater Copenhagen.

“Across Europe, we receive excellent service from WFS, and having spent time with many WFS employees over the years, it’s clear that Copenhagen is highly regarded,” said Paul Allen, American Airlines’ Regional Manager, Cargo Operations – EMEA. “We have a good working relationship with WFS at all levels, and with the Copenhagen area known for pharma traffic, we hope and expect to tap into that market.”

The introduction of direct flights from Copenhagen also benefits American Airlines’ customers in Sweden, offering faster cargo connections with the U.S.

Marc Claesen, Senior Vice President Commercial EMEAA at WFS, added: “American Airlines is a valued customer across our global network, so we are delighted to collaborate in Copenhagen to support the airline’s inaugural flights to its Philadelphia hub. This contract reflects our investments in modern terminal facilities, our capability to handle premium pharma cargoes, and our strong understanding of the airline’s high service standards. We look forward to making this new route another significant cargo success for American Airlines.”

WFS now manages approximately 100,000 tonnes annually in Copenhagen for over 20 online airline customers and more than 150 offline carriers.
