Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease, has become the first company in Ireland to commit to a 100% switch from traditional aviation fuel to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for air freight, significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Cutting Emissions by Over 80%
Through DHL Express’ GoGreen Plus service, Alexion’s European air freight shipments across 19 countries will now use SAF, reducing GHG emissions by over 80% on average compared to fossil-based jet fuel.
A Major Step in AstraZeneca’s Sustainability Strategy
This initiative supports AstraZeneca’s goal to halve its Scope 3 emissions by 2030 and achieve science-based net zero by 2045.
Sylvia Kiely, VP of Global Supply Chain at Alexion, emphasized:
“Switching to Sustainable Aviation Fuel immediately—rather than scaling up over time—demonstrates our commitment to environmental stewardship and our Scope 3 targets.”
DHL’s Commitment to Decarbonization
Brian Murray, Commercial & Same Day Director, DHL Express Ireland, added:
“This partnership highlights the power of collaboration in reducing emissions and aligns with DHL’s mission to achieve net-zero by 2050.”
This landmark partnership sets a new sustainability benchmark for the pharmaceutical and logistics industries, showcasing the tangible impact of SAF adoption in air freight.
