Air New Zealand Cargo is preparing for a bustling December and January, expecting to transport 5 million kilograms of cargo. With high demand for premium exports like cherries, meat, and seafood, the airline plays a key role in supporting New Zealand’s economy during the festive season.
Anne Dunne, general manager of cargo for the Auckland-based airline, highlighted the exceptional quality of New Zealand’s fresh produce.
“We love helping deliver some of New Zealand’s finest exports to the world, including our much-loved premium lamb and cherries,” Dunne said. “We’re like Santa’s little helpers, with our cargo hold brimming with seasonal goodies!”
Cherries: A Symbol of Prosperity
Cherries, a sought-after export during the weeks leading to Chinese New Year, are particularly significant. In Asian cultures, cherries symbolize good luck, prosperity, and family unity. With 80% of New Zealand’s cherry crop exported during this time, Air New Zealand Cargo is committed to ensuring every cherry reaches its destination.
The airline expects to transport up to 1 million kilograms of cherries to major markets including Taipei, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan, with smaller shipments heading to North America and Vietnam through airline partnerships.
Delivering Fresh Meat and Seafood
In addition to cherries, Air New Zealand Cargo is helping farmers export grass-fed lamb and beef to international markets just in time for Christmas. In November alone, the airline transported 120,000 kilograms of meat to destinations such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Zurich.
Seafood is another high-demand commodity, with salmon, tuna, and shellfish making their way across the Tasman Sea to Australia. Annually, 1.3 billion kilograms of seafood are exported to meet demand for summer feasts and celebrations.
Supporting New Zealand’s Export Economy
Dunne emphasized the airline’s vital role in connecting New Zealand’s exports to the world.
“Whether it’s lamb for a roast, cherries for a celebration, or seafood for a summer feast, it’s a privilege to partner with Kiwi exporters,” she said. “Exports drive growth, support local communities, and connect New Zealand to the global market.”
Air New Zealand Cargo’s efforts ensure that New Zealand’s prized products make their way to tables worldwide, spreading festive cheer and bolstering the nation’s economy.
